For those of you who might now know, Cyrpus is a small country in the heart of the Mediterranean sea. With a total population that’s an 1/8 that of New Jersey’s it’s no empire, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t an adventure to be had. For those headed to Cyprus we’ve got the inside scoop of the top 8 things to do in see when you visit.

1. Cliff Jumping at Cape Greco:

If you’re an adrenalin junkie looking for an exciting way to get your trip started look no further than the cliffs of Cape Greco. Standing 30 feet above the sea they will definitely get your heart pumping. These cliffs provide a safe and fun way to experience the short plunge into the water. Just beware of scuba divers below!

2. Ancient Huts of Choirokoitia:

Take a trip through time back some 9,000 years and get a feel for what it was like to be a farmer in Cyprus in the year 7000 BC. Choirokoitia is one of the earliest Neolithic cultures in the world and an incredible look at what life was like during this time period. With recreations of the circular stone huts that people used to live in, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for your modern home.

3. The Green Line:

If you’re looking to see something more recent but still historic visit the demilitarized zone in Nicosia. Creating a buffer between the Cypriots and Turks, it provides a glimpse of the events that took place during the war between these two countries only 40 years ago. Just remember to bring your passport if you want to cross from one side to the other.

4. Ancient Mosaics:

While you’re on a history kick, stop by the breathtaking Roman Mosaics in Pafos. As you’re walking through these amazing works of art it leaves you wondering what it would have been like to have lived in this ancient Roman Villa. Named The House of Dionysos due to the numerous depictions of Dionysos, the God of Wine, my guess is they knew how to have a good time.

5. Wine Tasting Tours:

Speaking of wine, after Pafos there is an amazing wine tour leading up through the mountains of Cyprus. This is a ride we definitely recommend taking. We went on Wine Tour Two (there are several of them and they are all numbered differently) and it will give you a completely different look at the island. An incredible drive by itself, we wandered into Vouni Panayia Winery where we met a local boy by the name of Chrisantos. He was 13 and gave us an complete tour of his family’s winery and explained the history of the region to us. His knowledge and ability to give us a complete tour while only being 13 years old was just as impressive as the views from their balcony.

6. Best Halloumi You’ll Ever Have:

Spending the day visiting historic landmarks and drinking wine in the mountains will definitely work up an appetite, and there is no better place to go than Taverna Mousikos in Sotira. Make sure you order the halloumi. We have been to Cyprus half a dozen times and always make time to stop by Taverna Mousikos. They have the best Haloumi you will ever eat. I never get tired of cutting that cheese! No really, it’s so soft that the knife cuts through it like butter.

7. Nissi Beach:

You are most likely going to need a place to stay while in Cyrpus, and our hotel of choice is always Nissi Beach Resort. Located on the eastern coast of the island this hotel is a paradise unto itself. With a beautiful beach just steps from your room there is not much more you would want in a hotel. Not to mention a short walk down the sandy shoreline and you’ll find yourself sitting at a beachside bar sipping Keo.

8. Aiya Napa:

If beachside bars aren’t enough entertainment for you downtown Aiya Napa is sure to satisfy. Just a short cab ride from Nissi beach this is a true party town. I mean their de facto slogan is “Aiya, Aiya, Aiya f*cking Napa!”. You’ll hear this shouted out frequently as your walking from bar to bar. This is one place not meant for the faint of heart.
